Creaky Bones

I'm a carer for the aged in the houses of the holy socks
Where mouldy books of poetry decay under the chiming clocks
The moths have eaten holes in time where memories depart
I'm a keeper of the creaky bones, the fibrillating hearts.

Where the curtains dangle, strangling the daylight as it's creeping in
And death is at the door, there's a shadow where he's sneakin' in
But life within the creaky bones ups and overflows
The plumbing blocks, her temper snaps, the fuse box explodes.

But now the old girl's fading and she's thinner than a spoon
The relatives arrive, she could be dying soon
But when the funeral's arranged and the eulogy's composed
She rises from her bed to make some toast.

The room is damp the furniture might fetch a bit at auction
I prompt the medication, it's a dubious concoction
Her eyes as big as bedpans are staring at me like the moon
She accuses me of pilfering her silver tablespoon.

And the slippery solicitor explains the codicil
To the family who are concerned about the will
I hoover up the arguments and the spider webs
The silver tablespoon has turned up underneath her bed.

Oh she goes wandering in dreams where legs no longer take her
She keeps me up all night and I'm forbidden to sedate her
She waxes and she wanes, she's dying by degrees
But the way I feel today I think she'll live longer than me.
